スパイカー社は、第二次大戦前にオランダに存在していた自動車メーカー「スパイカー」のブランドを復活させる形で、1997年にビクター・ミューラーCEOらが設立した。看板車種「C8」は、アウディ製の4.2リットルV型8気筒ガソリンエンジンを搭載し、最大出力400馬力。最高速は時速300kmを誇るスーパーカーだ。
スパイカーは2006年〜07年にF1に参入したほか、2010年初頭にスウェーデンの名門自動車メーカー「サーブ」を買収したことで、世界的に有名になった。しかし、その後は経営不振に陥り、2012年12月には中国のヤングマン（浙江青年蓮花汽車集団）からの出資を受け入れていた。
自動車専門サイト「Response」によると、ミューラーCEOは「この数年間、スパイカーは困難な状況に直面してきた。そして、取締役会で慎重に議論を重ねた結果、破産法の適用申請を決断した」とコメントしているという。
