反政府デモが続いているトルコで11日朝、イスタンブール中心部のタクシム広場に警官隊が突入、広場を占拠しているデモ隊の強制排除に乗り出した。イギリス・BBCによると、武装した警官たちが放水車や催涙弾などを使って排除しようとすると、デモ隊の一部から花火や投石などによる応戦があったという。
反政府デモは広場近くにある「ゲジ公園」の再開発計画をめぐり、先月末に始まった。デモを抑止しようと警察が催涙弾などを使ったことから、若者たちを中心に多くの人が抗議活動の一環で広場に集まる事態となった。エルドアン首相の退陣などを求めるデモ隊は公園に多く集まっているが、警察はここには介入しないとしている。
エルドアン首相は7日、北アフリカ諸国への外遊から帰国した直後、デモ隊を「ならず者」と呼んで非難するなど強い姿勢で対応することを示す一方、12日にはデモ隊の代表者らと初の対話を行うと発表していた。しかし、その前日に行われた今回の強制排除、デモ隊の政権への不信感が急速に高まることは避けられないと見られている。
