レトロな水着が最近再び流行の兆しを見せているが、人気の高いビンテージデザインの大半は、1922年に制定された規則に違反していることだろう。当時は、「水着警察」が遊歩道を巡回し、水着の裾がきわどい長さになっていないか確認していた。
米国議会図書館の説明によると、この画像は、ワシントンDCのタイダルベイスン・ビーチで1922年に撮影されたもの。同市の「水着警察官」ビル・ノートン氏が、女性の膝と水着の間隔を測っている。
ノートン氏は、同地区の公共建築物・用地を監視するシェレル警視監が発令した規則に従って行動していた。「水着の裾は膝上15センチより下にならなければならない」という規則だ。
この作品は、National Photo Companyが撮影したオリジナル写真を、redditに投稿しているkibblenbitsが最近着色処理したものだ。
オーストラリアの女優、アネット・ケラーマン（英仏海峡の水泳横断に挑戦した最初の女性）は、1900年代はじめに自身で首周りや手足が露出したワンピース型の水着をデザインしたが、1907年にアメリカを訪問してボストンビーチで着用した際、公然わいせつ罪で逮捕される事件が起こっている
