日本人11人目の宇宙飛行士、大西卓哉さん（40）らを乗せたロシアの宇宙船「ソユーズ」が日本時間の7月7日午前10時36分、カザフスタンのバイコヌール宇宙基地からロケットで打ち上げられた。「ソユーズ」は約9分後に、地球を周回する軌道に入り、打ち上げは成功した。NHKニュースなどが報じた。
大西さんは全日空のパイロット出身で、今回が初飛行。アメリカ航空宇宙局（NASA）などで訓練に従事し、2011年に宇宙飛行士に認定された。
打ち上げ前日となった6日、大西さんは記者会見で「きのう30年ぶりに任務の成功を願って短冊を書いた。笹がないので木につるしたい」と述べ、会場の笑いを誘ったという。その上で、「幸運にも七夕に飛行できるので、日本の方々の夢や希望みたいなものを背負って、あした、フライトできたらなと思います」とミッションへの意気込みを語った。
