婚約を伝える1958年11月27日付け朝日新聞の号外と、夕刊一面記事(複製)

お2人が婚約することが皇室会議を経て決定されたのは、1958年11月27日のこと。美智子妃は初めての一般家庭出身の皇太子妃(当時)となり、しかも交際を経て皇太子さま(当時)ご自身が選ばれたという点が「皇室史上画期的なことで、皇室の在り方のひとつの大きな転機となる」と、驚きを持って伝えられている。

宮内庁での記者会見で、美智子妃が陛下(当時は皇太子)を評して「初印象は清潔なお方。誠実で、心からご信頼、ご尊敬申し上げられる」と語った言葉は、流行語にもなった。

美智子妃の人柄を伝える夕刊一面の見出しは「お年は十カ月違い 感じのよいお嬢さん」。本文にも「お白粉はほとんどつけたことがない」などと書かれており、時代を感じさせる。その他、戦時中は疎開で転校を繰り返したことや、聖心女子大時代にスチューデント・ガバメント(全学自治会)のプレジデントを務めたなどの経歴を紹介している。

この記事で驚きなのは、身長のみならず体重まで明かされていること。身長は1メートル61センチ(五尺三寸)、体重は「50キロ強の中肉中背」と書かれていた。

よく知られているように、お2人の交際のきっかけとなったのは1957年、軽井沢のテニスコートでの出会いだった。若き日のお2人と同じように、年を重ねても最も生き生きとしたお2人の姿が撮影された場所は、やはりコートなのだった。
