アメリカの演劇界で最も権威のあるトニー賞の授賞式が6月7日、ニューヨークで行われている。「王様と私」に主演した俳優の渡辺謙がミュージカル部門で主演男優賞を受賞するかどうかが注目される。

「王様と私」は１９世紀のシャム（現タイ）王国の国王と英国人家庭教師の交流、葛藤を描いたミュージカルで、初演は１９５１年。映画化もされた。渡辺主演のリバイバル公演は、今年４月にニューヨークのリンカーンセンターで始まった。

レッドカーペットには渡辺謙をはじめ、「王様と私」で主演女優賞にノミネートされたケリー・オハラのほか、アメリカ系アフリカ人女性で初めてのソリストとなったバレリーナのミスティ・コープランド、クリントン元大統領とのスキャンダルで話題となったモニカ・ルインスキーさんなどが登場した。
