アメリカの人気ロックバンドTOTOの元ベーシスト、マイク・ポーカロさんが3月15日、死去した。59歳だった。全身の運動神経が衰える難病の筋萎縮性側索硬化症(ALS)を患っていた。メンバーでキーボード奏者の弟、スティーブ・ポーカロさんがFacebookで明らかにした。


スティーブさんは「マイクは昨夜午前0時4分、彼の家族に見守られながら、自宅で眠るようにして逝った。兄よ、安らかに…」と記した。

スポニチは次の通り報じた。

「アフリカ」「ロザーナ」などのヒット曲で知られるTOTOは1977年結成。マイクさんは83年に加入し、07年から病気療養に入った。堅実にビートを刻む演奏スタイルで数多くのアーティストに信頼され、日本でも渡辺美里(48)のアルバム「Flower bed」(89年)のレコーディングに参加した。

バンドは08年の解散後、マイクさん救済のため10年に欧州各地でツアーを開催。昨年、3年ぶりの日本公演も行われた。
