ウクライナで5月25日に行われた大統領選挙は、出口調査の結果、ペトロ・ポロシェンコ元外相の当選が当選確実となった。毎日新聞などが伝えた。
ポロシェンコ氏は「大統領としての最初の課題は、戦いを終わらせ国に平和をもたらすことだ」と述べ、親ロシア派武装勢力による行政庁舎占拠が続く東部を近く訪問したい考えを示した。

BBCによると、ポロシェンコ氏は出口調査で55.9％の支持を得ており、第1回投票で過半数を獲得するため6月に行われる予定の決選投票の前に当選を確実にした。
また、CNNによると、ポロシェンコ氏の対抗馬で政党「祖国」代表のティモシェンコ元首相は出口調査で13％の支持にとどまっている。
ウクライナからの分離独立を訴える親ロシア派の住民が占拠しているドネツクなどウクライナ東部では混乱が続いている。ウクライナの中央選管によると、東部の都市ルガンスクでは18％、ドネツクでは31％しか投票所を開くことができなかったとUSA TODAYは伝えている。
BBCによると、ポロシェンコ氏は現在48歳。菓子メーカー「ロシェン」を創業して富を築き、「チョコレート王」の異名を持つ。雑誌「フォーブス」の調査で、資産は2013年3月の時点で約16億ドル（約1630億円）。
政治家としては、親ロシア派と親欧州派の両方の陣営に属していたことがある。親ロシア派のヤヌコビッチ前大統領が設立した「地域党」創設メンバーの一員だったが、2001年には親欧州派のユシチェンコ元大統領の政党「我がウクライナ」に参加。2004年に起きたオレンジ革命の主要人物ともなっている。ユシチェンコ元大統領はポロシェンコ氏の子どもの名付け親にもなっている。
2009年から10年にかけて、ティモシェンコ元首相の下で外相を務め、2012年には短期間ながら経済開発・貿易相も務めた。
