ソチオリンピックのノルディックスキー複合の男子ノーマルヒル個人で2月12日、渡部暁斗が銀メダルを獲得した。日本の複合では20年ぶりのメダルとなった。弟の渡部善斗も15位に入った。
同日行われた前半のジャンプでは、渡部暁斗が100.5メートルを飛び2位につけた。トップのエリック・フレンツェル（ドイツ）と6秒差で後半のクロスカントリーをスタート。激しい競り合いをしたがゴール直前で惜しくも引き離された。

ノルディックスキー複合は、1人の選手がジャンプとクロスカントリーを両方こなす競技。前半のジャンプの得点差をタイムに換算し、後半クロスカントリーをスタート。ゴールした順位が成績となる。渡部暁斗はジャンプ後、「とりあえず後半に向けていいレースができるかなと思った。6秒差はほとんどないような物」と自信をのぞかせていた。

1992年と94年の冬季オリンピックでは、日本勢はジャンプで得点を稼ぐ戦略で、荻原健司らが金メダルを獲得した。しかし、その後はジャンプの得点の下げるルール変更もあり、メダルを逃している。日本勢はクロスカントリー強化で、20年ぶりのメダルを狙っていた。
