野球の国・地域別対抗戦、第4回ワールド・ベースボール・クラシック（WBC）、日本代表「侍ジャパン」は3月22日午前10時（現地時間21日午後6時）からロサンゼルスでアメリカとの準決勝に臨んだが、1-2で敗れ、2大会ぶりの決勝進出はならなかった。
日本の先発投手は菅野（巨人）、アメリカはロアーク（ナショナルズ）。
アメリカは4回、6番・マカチェン（パイレーツ）のレフト前タイムリーで1点を先制した。日本は6回、菊池（広島）のソロホームランで同点に追いついたが、アメリカは7回に1点を勝ち越し、継投で日本の攻撃を断ち切った。
小久保監督「ホームが遠い、そういう試合だった。投手はバリバリのメジャーリーガを相手に本当によく投げたが、こちらが芯で捉えることができなかった。守備のミスも出たが選手を責められない。1点が遠かった。一発勝負で非常に難しい戦い。後半、8回が勝負だと思って形は作ったが、そこでヒットが出るか出ないかは、まあ、分からない」

20日にあった準決勝のもうひと試合では、前回準優勝のプエルトリコがオランダに4-3でサヨナラ勝ち。2大会連続で決勝進出を決めた。日本時間で23日午前10時からの決勝は、アメリカとプエルトリコの対戦となった。
