イタリアの首都ローマで、史上初の女性市長が誕生する。6月19日、イタリア地方選挙の決選投票が実施され、ローマ市長選で野党「五つ星運動」の女性候補ビルジニア・ラッジ氏(37)が、レンツィ首相率いる中道左派の与党の民主党候補を引き離し、当選確実となった。現地紙のレピュブリカ紙などが報じた。

「五つ星運動」は、芸能界出身のベッペ・グリッロ氏が既存政党に対抗して立ち上げた、反体制派の新興政党。厳しい緊縮財政への反発から、EU(ヨーロッパ連合)に批判的で、単一通貨「ユーロ」にも反対の立場だ。

時事ドットコムは「23日に迫ったEU離脱の是非を問うイギリス国民投票とも絡み、EUに懐疑の目を向ける最近の欧州の風潮にまた一つ強い風を送り込みそうだ」と分析している。

レンツィ首相は上院の権限縮小などを盛り込んだ憲法改正案を、10月の国民投票で問う方針。そのため今回の地方選は、首相にとって試金石になるとみられていたニューヨークタイムズによると、レンツィ首相は「今回の選挙は、中央政府には影響を与えない」とコメントしたが、憲法改正に政治生命をかけるとしてきた首相にとっては、首都ローマでの敗北は痛手となるという見方もでている

■ビルジニア・ラッジ氏ってどんな人?

ビルジニア・ラッジ氏は37歳。ローマで生まれ育ち、法律を学び弁護士となった。郊外で息子と一緒に暮らしている。イギリスの経済誌「エコノミスト」は3月の記事の中で「優秀な論客(talented debater)」と評した。選挙前にはニューヨークタイムズのインタビューに対し「子供達のために世界を変えたいと願う、母親たちのために頑張りたい」と語っていた。選挙戦では、汚職撲滅や行政サービス向上を訴えた。

ローマでは2015年10月、民主党の前市長が公費流用疑惑で辞任。さらに、市当局とマフィアとの癒着スキャンダルも明らかになった。こうした政治不信が背景となって、新鮮なイメージを持つラッジ氏が支持を拡大したとみられる。
