モーターレースの最高峰、F1で活躍した経験もあるイタリア人、アレックス・ザナルディ。47歳の彼は2001年、レース中に大事故を起こし、両足切断の重傷を追う。復活した彼が、動画で語った今。

モーターレースの最高峰、F1で活躍した経験もあるイタリア人、アレックス・ザナルディ。47歳の彼は2001年、レース中に大事故を起こし、両足切断の重傷を追う。本人が、「車は2つに分かれた。一方には私の体があり、私の脚が残っていたもう一方は、“サヨナラ”と、違う方向へ離れていった」と語るほどの大事故だ。

しかしザナルディのレースへの情熱はしぼまない。事故から2年も経たないうちにCART選手権のレースに復帰。それから3年後の2006年には表彰台にも登った。

2009年、ザナルディはカーレースを引退。今度は手で漕ぐ自転車、ハンドサイクリングに転向。2012年のロンドンパラリンピックを目指す。そして、2個の金メダル、1個の銀メダルを取った。競技後、ザナルディはBBCにこう話している。

「20歳の時なら、メダルに価値を感じていただろう。でも、40歳になると毎日積み重ねてきたことに価値を感じるよ。(中略)実現できない夢を追うべきじゃないのはもちろんだけど、もし地平線が見えるならやるべきだよ。幸せはいつも、コーナーを曲がった先にあるのだから」。

そして2014年。ザナルディはまたカーレースに挑戦している。

彼の普段の練習風景を収めたビデオで彼はいう。「僕はアレックス・ザナルディ。ラッキーな人間。まだまだ若い、47歳」。
