ブラジルの真夏の祭典、リオデジャネイロのカーニバルは2月7日、12のトップチームが登場して最高潮を迎えた。8月のリオ・オリンピックに向けて世界の注目が集まる中、大胆な衣装に身を包んだダンサーらがサンバのステップを披露した。共同通信などが伝えた。
ブラジルでは、蚊を媒介とする感染症ジカ熱が流行。妊婦の感染と新生児の小頭症との関連も指摘されるが、7万人余りを収容する専用会場サンボドロモには多くの人が詰め掛けた。サンボドロモは、五輪でマラソンの発着点やアーチェリー会場としても使われる。

5日に始まったカーニバルは、9日まで続く。リオ市当局は100万人超の観光客が押し寄せる、同市に及ぼす経済効果は約30億レアル（約899億円）近くと見込んでいる。
