ナッター市長は事故現場について「脱線した列車は完全に破損し、バラバラになっている。こんな事故はこれまで見たことがない。けが人の大半がフィラデルフィア以外の人たちだ」と述べた。今回の事故は国家運輸安全委員会（NTSB）が定めるレベル3（多数の死傷者が発生した事故）とされた。
フィラデルフィアのデリック・ソイヤー消防本部長によると、列車には243人が乗っていたとみられ、53人が病院に搬送され、6人が重体と発表していた。今後、死者と怪我人の数が増える可能性もある。
