イスラエルとパレスチナの分離壁を見下ろすホテル バンクシーが開業

「みなさん、ここにいらしてください。ぜひイスラエル国民の方々に来ていただきたいです」

ヨルダン川西岸地区のベツレヘムにある9室のゲストハウス「ウォールド・オフ・ホテル(壁で隔てられたホテル)」へようこそ! このディストピア風の宿は、イスラエルとパレスチナを分断する壁に面した場所にあり、宿の壁には、覆面芸術家バンクシーの作品が至るところに描かれている。

「分離壁のストーリーを多面的に語り、そのストーリーを訪問者自身で発見してもらうこと、これが目的だ」と、バンクシーはリリースで語った。バンクシーは、最新のアート・プロジェクト「機能的なホテル」で、イスラエルの若者が論争の場に加わるよう願っている。しかし彼らがここに来るためには、パレスチナ自治区を通過する違法な旅をしなければならない。

「みなさん、ここにいらしてください。ぜひイスラエル国民の方々に来ていただきたいです」と、ホテル・マネージャのウィサム・サルサさんは言った。「イスラエルの方々に、私たちのことをもっと知っていただければ、常識が破壊され、世の中が変わります」

ホテル自体も訪問者が学び、訪問者間の対話を促すような仕掛けがある。いつものバンクシー流、ブラック・ユーモアだ。例えば、イスラエルとパレスチナの男が枕投げを繰り広げる絵が壁に描かれたベッドルームがある。ハンティングのトロフィーを並べたかのような監視カメラの放列を配した壁もある。

ホテルのウェブサイトでは、ピアノ・バーについて次のように説明している。「破壊を描いた油絵画、催涙ガスにむせぶ彫像など、バンクシーの作品コレクションをご覧いただけます。毎日、暖かいスコーンとフレッシュなお茶をボーン・チャイナでおもてなしいたします。ウォールド・オフ・サラダもぜひお試しください」

ピアノ・バーは、パレスチナ地区がイギリスの植民地時代だった頃の名残がある。このホテルは、イギリスのバルフォア外相が、パレスチナのユダヤ人居住地建設を支持した1917年の「バルフォア宣言」から100年に合わせて開業した。

ホテル敷地内には、パレスチナ人アーティストの作品を展示するギャラリーもある。この一画は、キュレーターのホスニ・アルカティブ・シャハダさんが企画した。海外での美術展に移動させるのが難しいアーティストたちの作品展示に提供される予定だ。

ホテルは3月11日にオープンする。一泊がわずか30ドル(約3400円)の部屋もある。数百万ドルの値打ちのある作品を間近に自分のものにすることができる。こんな素晴らしいことはない。しかし、保証金1000ドル(約11万円)を前払いする必要がある。貴重な芸術作品の盗難や破壊を防ぐためだ。

「ここにある作品は、パレスチナのコミュニティと彼らの闘争のために寄付した」と、バンクシーはネット上で明らかにした。「盗み出したり、ホテルの所有物を破損しようとする者は逮捕され、ラマラ警察に身柄を移され、現地の法律によって起訴される」
