地元紙「St. Louis Post-Dispatch」の報道によると、マーティンさんは、ミズーリ州バークレーのガソリンスタンドで白人の警察官に撃たれたという。警察は、マーティンさんが警察官に銃を向けたため発砲したと説明している。

被害者とされるマーティンさんの母親、トニー・マーティンさんはPost-Dispatchの取材に対し、息子が警察に撃たれたと話している。

セントルイス郡警察の報道官、ブライアン・シェルマン巡査部長によると、バークレー警察署の警察官は、定期巡回中の23日23時15分頃、ガソリンスタンドで2人の男の姿を見かけ、彼らに近づいたという。

警察官にはボディカメラが支給されていたが、事件発生当時は装着していなかったと、セントルイス郡警察のジョン・ベルマー署長は24日の午前に行われた記者会見で述べた。
