NHKによると、この事件はことし5月、アメリカ中西部のオハイオ州・クリーブランドの住宅で、2002年から数年の間に相次いで行方不明になった当時14歳から20歳までの女性3人が見つかり、保護されたもので、この住宅の所有者のアリエル・カストロ被告(53)が監禁や強姦、それに女性が流産するまで暴行を加えたとして殺人など900件を超える罪に問われていた。

この裁判を巡って、先月、司法取引で、検察側が死刑の求刑を断念する代わりにカストロ被告が有罪を認めたため、1日、オハイオ州の裁判所はカストロ被告に対して、終身刑に加えて禁錮1000年の刑を言い渡した。

判決に先立って、カストロ被告は、被害者の女性たちに対して謝罪のことばを述べたものの、「自分は怪物ではないし、暴力的ではなかった」と釈明した。

これに対し裁判官は、「自分がどう思おうと、被告の犯行は非人道的で、これだけの刑に値する」と述べた。

ハフィントン・ポストアメリカ版では、「I Am Not A Monster(私は怪物ではない)」というカストロ被告の言葉をタイトルに用いて判決の様子を伝えている。

■ 被害女性「『笑顔で顔を上げて』生きる」

産経新聞によると、5月に保護された3人の被害女性は7月8日夜、社会からの励ましや寄付に感謝し「新しい人生」を築きつつあると話すビデオメッセージを動画サイトのユーチューブで公表している

被害者アマンダ・ベリーさん(27)は「家族、友達と一緒に家にいられてどんなに幸せか皆に知ってほしい。支えてくれた全ての人に感謝している」。ミシェル・ナイトさん(32)は事件を「地獄」と振り返る一方、「笑顔で顔を上げて」生きるとし「私は事件に支配されない、私は事件を克服する。憎しみに押しつぶされるのは嫌」と話した。
