イギリスのウィリアム王子(30)の妻キャサリン妃(31)が入院先の病院で出産し、第一子が誕生した。王室が同日夜発表した声明によると、王子は午後4時24分(日本時間23日午前0時24分)に生まれた。体重は8ポンド6オンス(約3800グラム)。母子ともに健康という。

NHKによると、発表からおよそ30分後には、医師が署名した子どもの誕生を告げる書面が、病院からバッキンガム宮殿に届けられ、書面が正門に掲げられると、集まった市民から大きな歓声が上がった。

朝日新聞デジタルによると、王位継承順位はチャールズ皇太子、その長男ウィリアム王子に次ぐ第3位。将来の英国王になる予定だ。

イギリス王室は22日、ホームページ上で「エリザベス女王はウィリアム王子とキャサリンさんの間に赤ちゃんが誕生したというニュースを喜んでいる」とする声明を発表した

イギリスのキャメロン首相は、ロンドン市内の自宅前で記者団の取材に応じ、キャサリンさんが無事、男の子を出産したことについて「とてもすばらしいニュースでイギリス中が祝福している。イギリスにとっても重要なことだが、何よりもウィリアム夫妻にとってすばらしい瞬間になったことだと思う。ここ数年間、王室ではウィリアム夫妻の結婚式が人々に感動を与えるなどすばらしいことが続いている」と述べた

NHKによると、イギリスの王室では、子どもの名前の付け方について決められたルールはなく、ウィリアム王子と妻のキャサリンさんとの間で生まれた男の子の名前は、夫妻の考えを優先して決められるものとみられる。実際には、歴代の王などよく知られた王室のメンバーの名前から取られてきた。ただ、最近の名前は避けて、ミドルネームに使うのではないかとみられている。また、キャサリンさんの家族の名前がミドルネームに使われるという見方も出ている。

ウィリアム王子は、1982年6月21日、ロンドン・パディントンのセント・メアリ病院で生まれた。母は、97年に交通事故で亡くなった故ダイアナ皇太子妃。3歳離れた弟のハリー王子と2人兄弟。現在は30歳。

キャサリン妃1982年1月9日生まれで31歳。通信販売会社経営者の裕福な家庭に生まれた。2人はセント・アンドリュー大学の同期生で、同い年。ともに美術史を学んでいて知り合った。後に王子は地理学に転向したが、大学2年次からは、他の友人2人とともに4人でタウンハウスに住むなど親しく交際してきた

2010年11月16日に婚約が発表され、2011年4月29日、ロンドンのウェストミンスター寺院で結婚式を挙げた。2012年12月3日には第一子の妊娠が発表された

セント・メアリー病院は、故ダイアナ元皇太子妃が同王子とヘンリー王子を産んだ病院で、同病院で82年にウィリアム王子、84年にヘンリー王子を出産した

第一子は、2013年4月に性別に関係なく長子を優先する改正王位継承法案が英議会で可決されたことにより、女の子でも男の子でも、王位継承順位は第3位となる

キャサリン妃は出産後の約1カ月半、ロイヤルベイビーとともにイングランド南東のバークシャー州にある実家で両親と過ごすことになっている。キャサリン妃は以前、実家にいる時が「一番安全で落ち着くことができる」と話していた
