携帯電話が、アフリカの一部地域で急速に普及している。場所によっては固定電話を持たないまま、携帯電話が広がるほどの勢いだ。
アフリカでの携帯電話普及を長年にわたって調べているアメリカのピュー研究所によると、サハラ以南の７カ国、ウガンダ、タンザニア、ケニア、ガーナ、セネガル、ナイジェリア、南アフリカでは、2002年に調査を始めた時に比べて、はるかに多くの人が携帯電話を所有するようになっている。
2002年に携帯電話を所有している成人はタンザニア、ウガンダ、ケニア、ガーナで約10％、南アフリカ共和国では33％だったが、2014年の調査では、スマートフォンもしくは携帯電話を所有している成人の割合は、南アフリカ共和国とナイジェリアで89％、セネガルとガーナで83％、ケニアで82％、タンザニアで73％、ウガンダでは65％と大幅に増加した。

一方で「自宅に固定電話がある」と答えた人はわずか2％だった。また、大半の人が持っているのは携帯電話で、まだスマートフォンは広がっていないが、携帯電話が普及したことで、「コミュニケーションをするためのライフライン」が整備され、今までにはなかったような形で人と人とを結びつけているという。
携帯電話の使い方としては、80％（中央値）の人々がメッセージを送るためと回答しており、続いて写真や動画の撮影が50％、支払いの受け取りが30％、政治関連ニュースを読むが21％、ソーシャルネットワークの利用が19％、健康に関する情報収集が17％、そして職探しが14％がだった。
また、少しでも英語を理解できる人の方が携帯電話を所有している傾向がある、とピュー研究所は指摘する。
ピュー研究所の調査は、サハラ以南の地域全体で携帯電話の普及率が長期にわたって上昇していることを示しているが、同じくメディアもアフリカでの携帯電話の広がりを報じている。
CNNは2012年に、アフリカでは「電気を利用している人」より「携帯電話を使っている人」のほうが多いと伝えており、PBSは多くの人が携帯電話を使って商取引を行うようになって、ケニアなどの国で起業が増えている様子を2014年に紹介している。
一方で、携帯電話に関しては忘れてはいけない影の部分もある。携帯電話などの電子機器の製造には、金、スズ、タンタル、タングステンといった鉱物が欠かせない。それらの鉱物の多くはコンゴで産出されているが、莫大な価値がある鉱物の採掘場を武装集団が支配下におさめ、女性や子供を含む住民に対して暴力をふるってきた。
しかし、2010年にアメリカでドッド・フランク法が施行され、すべてのアメリカの上場企業に対して、金、スズ、タンタル、タングステンの原産地を開示する義務が課せられたことで流れは変わってきているようだ。武装勢力とのつながりを指摘されることを嫌った企業がコンゴの鉱物を使わないようになり、紛争解決に取り組む「Enough Project」の2014年の報告によると、今では多くの採掘場は武装集団の支配下から脱しているという。

This is then placed on top of a conventional display with the result being that colours look astonishingly defined.
