Malaysia aims to draw $444 billion in investments over the next decade with plans unveiled Tuesday to wire up the nation, develop nuclear energy and build a high-speed rail link to Singapore as it seeks to become a developed nation by 2020. Urban transportation will be upgraded with plans for a massive mass rail transit network for its largest city Kuala Lumpur that includes 141 kilometers (87 miles) of tunnels. It also mulls a high-speed rail link from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore, a plan once proposed by conglomerate YTL that failed to take off a few years ago. Tama Monorail Train on Tappi-bashi(27 of38)

The picture shows a Tama monorail train running on Tappi-bashi.\n\nTappi-bashi is a bridge across the Tama River. It is located at the south of Tachikawa. When the bridge was constructed in 1989, it did not have Tama monorail track on it. The construction of Tama monorail in the south of Tachikawa began in 1992 and finished in 2000.\n\nYou may notice that the train looks taller than Tokyo monorail train. It is a result of solving a problem of Tokyo monorail train. When Hitachi created the train, the company had to hide the bulge on the floor made by the case of the driving unit. They located passenger seats on it. But the seats in the center of the floor are an annoying obstacle to walk in the car. Recent monorails in Japan have flat floor, by using higher floor. As a result, the train is taller. (credit:ykanazawa1999/Flickr)

I grew up in central florida, so I received the "monorails are cool" Disney indoctrination early in life. The thing is, they really are, with lots of cost and construction benefits over light rail public transport. I was all psyched to ride the Vegas monorail, but between you and me, it was a bit of a dissapointment. The ride quality just wasn\'t what I think it should have been (not as smooth as it should have been), and it had some of the worst information design I\'ve ever seen in public transport. Riders were constantly stumped about how the ticket vending machines, turnstiles, and system maps work. And yes, it takes a special kind of design gafaw to confuse people when you\'re talking about a metro map with only one line. (credit:dcJohn/Flickr)
