銃声を聞いたフランシス・ジョンさん（70）は、事件当時、公園近くにある3棟続きの平屋住宅の2階にいた。「バーン、バーン、バーンと（銃声が）何回も聞こえてきました」とジョンさんはシカゴ・サン・タイムズに語っている。
銃乱射事件発生後、大人10人と3歳の子供が消防隊の救急車で地区の病院に搬送された。12番目の犠牲者は自力で運転して病院に向かったと見られると、シカゴ・トリビューンは伝えている。
銃撃事件の数時間後、警察は計13人が負傷したことを発表。3歳の男の子、10代の子が2人、大人10人としている。3歳の男の子デオンタイ・ハワードくんはもっとも深刻な怪我を負っている。彼は頭部を撃たれ重体。
