シカゴ市サウスサイドの公園で9月19日(日本時間20日)夜、3歳の男の子を含む13人が銃乱射で負傷。伝えられているところによると、銃撃はシカゴ市南西部のバック・オブ・ザ・ヤーズ地区付近のコーネルスクエア公園にあるバスケットボールコートで起きた。

銃声を聞いたフランシス・ジョンさん(70)は、事件当時、公園近くにある3棟続きの平屋住宅の2階にいた。「バーン、バーン、バーンと(銃声が)何回も聞こえてきました」とジョンさんはシカゴ・サン・タイムズに語っている。

銃乱射事件発生後、大人10人と3歳の子供が消防隊の救急車で地区の病院に搬送された。12番目の犠牲者は自力で運転して病院に向かったと見られると、シカゴ・トリビューンは伝えている。

銃撃事件の数時間後、警察は計13人が負傷したことを発表。3歳の男の子、10代の子が2人、大人10人としている。3歳の男の子デオンタイ・ハワードくんはもっとも深刻な怪我を負っている。彼は頭部を撃たれ重体。

シカゴ警察は銃乱射事件に関して非常に短い声明を発表。この銃撃がギャングの抗争に関連したものと見られること以外については触れていない。容疑者については不明だとしている。
