中国・北京の天壇公園のトイレでは、機械が人の顔を認識してトイレットペーパーを自動で配る。

くだらないアイディアに聞こえるかもしれないが、中国の公園ではトイレットペーパーの短い切れ端を配るために顔認証テクノロジーを利用している。トイレットペーパー泥棒の一掃を目的とした、ハイテクな実験の一環だ。

ニューヨークタイムズによると、北京・天壇公園のトイレにあるトイレットペーパーは現在すべてしまい込まれており、6台の機械が顔認証ソフトウェアを通じて配布している。利用者が自分の取り分以上に紙を取ることができないようにするためだ。

テック系ニュースサイト「Verge.com」によると、機械はトイレットペーパーを約60cmだけ配布する。短すぎる、と思う人もいるかもしれない。もし紙が足りなければ、追加の紙をもらうためには9分待たなければならない。

中国政府当局が反体制派を締め出すために、この機械からデータを収集して利用するのではないか、と懸念する地元の人もいる。

BBCによると、当局者は「公園のトイレットペーパーはシングルからダブルにグレードアップして、利用者がより簡単に利用できるようにしている」と語った。さらに、紙が60cm以上必要な人は、公園のスタッフに要望することができる。

公園の広報担当者は「利用者が下痢などの状態で、緊急にトイレットペーパーが必要な場合は、現場のスタッフが直接トイレットペーパーを渡します」と話した。

たかが安価なトイレットペーパーを盗難から守るために、高価な顔認証システムでトイレットペーパーを配布するのは、極端なことにみえるかもしれない。しかし地元メディア「Shanghaiist.com」によると、3月になって窃盗犯が公園のトイレから毎日30ロールのトイレットペーパーを盗んでいることがわかったという。
