クリントン氏の夫、ビル・クリントン元大統領のかつての不倫相手、ジェニファー・フラワーズさんを最前列に座らせる ―― 9月26日夜(日本時間27日午前)に行われたアメリカ大統領選テレビ討論会の前、共和党の候補トランプ氏は、こう発言して注目を集めていた。

これは、トランプ氏に批判的な投資家のマーク・キューバン氏が「クリントン陣営に討論会に招かれて最前列に座る」とツイートしたことを受けての発言だった。

「テレビ討論会の最前列の席を手に入れた。ヒラリー・クリントンがドナルド・トランプを圧倒するところを見られる」

「間抜けなマーク・キューバンが最前列に座るなら、ジェニファー・フラワーズを、そのすぐ横に座らせよう!」

トランプ氏は、1970年代にビル・クリントン氏と不倫関係にあったフラワーズさんを最前列に座らせることで、クリントン氏に恥をかかせられると思ったようだ。また、トランプ氏は夫婦の不倫の原因は女性にあると思っているようで、2015年にクリントン氏を侮辱するこんなツイートをしている。

「ヒラリー・クリントンは、夫を満足させられないのに、どうしてアメリカ国民を満足させられるなんて思うんだろう」

ちなみにトランプ氏自身は、最初の2人の妻と自分の浮気が原因で離婚している

しかし結局、トランプ陣営はフラワーズさんを招いていないことを討論会の前に明らかにした。また当日、司会のレスター・ホルト氏に、クリントン氏と彼女の家族が「ひどく不快に感じるであろうことを言う」と告げていたが、不倫について触れなかった。その理由を、トランプ氏はFOXのインタビューでこう述べている

「彼女の夫が同じ会場にいて、すぐ隣に彼女の娘のチェルシーもいた。娘はとてもいい子だ。不倫の話もしようと思っていたけれど、言えば、彼らの生活にも影響するだろう。だから言わなかったんだ。チェルシーとまあそれに家族にも失礼になると思ったからね」

その次のCNNのインタビューでも「ビル・クリントンの過ちについて発言するのは我慢した。チェルシー・クリントンのために言わなかったんだ」

クリントン氏の娘チェルシーさんと、トランプ氏の娘イヴァンカさんは仲がいいことで知られている。娘の気持ちを考えて、トランプ氏はビル・クリントン氏の不倫を攻撃材料にするのを我慢したようだ。

しかし彼は、CNNのインタビューでこうも付け加えている。「だけど、次の討論会では言うかもしれない。楽しみにしていてくれ」
