アメリカ大統領選の民主党候補ヒラリー・クリントン氏と、共和党候補ドナルド・トランプ氏が初めて直接対決するテレビ討論会が、9月26日夜（現地時間）、ニューヨークで行われた。
11月8日の投票に大きな影響を与えると言われるテレビ討論での終盤、2人は大統領の資質をめぐって白熱の議論を交わした。
トランプ氏は、日米安保条約などにより、日本の安全保障に協力していることを念頭に「アメリカは日本を守っているが、日本やドイツは公平な負担をしていない」「日本のせいで巨額の金を失った。アメリカは世界の警察ではない」などと発言した。
