ラグビー日本代表のヘッドコーチを1日に退任したばかりのエディ・ジョーンズさんの会見が11月2日、日本外国特派員協会で開かれた。

ワールドカップの南アフリカ戦で劇的な逆転勝利を収めたことについて、「おとぎ話が現実になった」と喜びを露わにした。また、日本のラグビー界はまだ「(ワールドカップに)参加することに意義があるというレベルに留まっている」と分析した上で、「2019年のワールドカップでは日本はホスト国になるわけだから、世界に通用する選手を育成しなくてはいけない」として、選手育成のシステムが出来ていないと苦言を呈した。

ジョーンズさんは3日に離日し、国際リーグ「スーパーラグビー」のストーマーズ(南アフリカ)でヘッドコーチに就任する。記者団とのやり取りの抜粋は、以下の通り。

■「エリート街道を構築する必要がある」

――日本のラグビーの体制に不満だから退任するという報道もありますが、日本のラグビー界についてどう考えていますか?

ジョーンズさん:ラグビーには2つの側面があります。1つは参加すること。もう1つはエリートを目指すということです。エリートを目指すのか、参加をめざすのか。日本は後者でやってきました。「参加することに意義がある」という方式です。日の目を見ず、練習だけで終わることもあります。しかし、やるならトップレベルをめざすべきです。2019年はホスト国になるわけだから、ラグビーの名門大学の選手が、きちんとエリートコースを目指すようにするべきです。世界に通用する選手を育成しないといけないと思います。

世界のラグビー界で、一流の大学は偶然ではなく、きちんと計画を立てています。エリート街道を構築して、プランニングしなくては世界レベルの選手は出てこないと思います。

――ワールドカップの南アフリカ戦が「最高の瞬間」として表彰されたことについてどう思いますか?

ジョーンズさん:それは知りませんでした、いいニュースですね。あのゲームのあと、「素晴らしい瞬間だ」と皆さんに言ってもらっていたので、それをラグビー界が表彰してくれたのは、良かったと思います。日本が南アフリカに勝ったという歴史的な瞬間。ブライトンは3万人もの観衆がいる中で、日本はアウェイでしたが、試合終了の2分前にキャプテンが素晴らしい決定をしました。これはおとぎ話が、現実になったわけです。ますますここから、成長していかないといけないと思います。

私がヘッドコーチとして就任した当初のことを思い出します。ニュージランドにしても、南アフリカにしても、「どのチームが一番素晴らしいか」というと、いろいろなチームを挙げてくれました。でも、日本のジャーナリストは答えられないんです。それで、私は選手達に「これはチャンスだ。今後は『日本代表が素晴らしいチームだ』と、ジャーナリストたちが答えるような世界を作りなさい」と言っていたんです。
