インド東部のシリグリで2月10日、森からやってきた野生のゾウが商店街や住宅地で大暴れし、建物など約100カ所を破壊した。

インド東部のシリグリで2月10日、森からやってきた野生のゾウが商店街や住宅地で大暴れし、建物など約100カ所を破壊した。住民が逃げ回ったり、やじ馬がスマートフォンで撮影しようと追いかけたりして大混乱になった。

当局は麻酔銃を使ってゾウを捕獲した。近く森に戻す方針だ。現地紙ヒンドゥスタン・タイムズなどが伝えた。

西ベンガル州のビナイ・クリシュナ・バーマン森林担当相は、AFP通信の電話取材に「群れからはぐれて近隣の森林からさまよい出たゾウがシリグリに迷い込んだ。市内は5時間近くにわたってパニックに陥った」と答えた。また、市内の通りを自由に走り回ったため、家屋や車が多数損壊した。

共同通信によると、インドでは人口が増加したことに伴って、近年東部を中心にゾウがらみの騒動が増えているという。
