天皇、皇后両陛下は4月15日、熊本県で起きた地震災害を受け、河相周夫侍従長を通じて熊本県の蒲島郁夫知事に、見舞いと災害対策に従事している関係者に対するねぎらいの気持ちを伝えられた。NHKニュースなどが報じた。
両陛下は、１４日夜の地震で多数の死傷者、避難者が発生するなど、県民生活に大きな被害が生じていることに心を痛め、犠牲者に対する悼みと被害を被った人々へのお見舞いの気持ち、それに、災害対策に従事している関係者に対するねぎらいの気持ちを伝えられました。両陛下は、まだまだ朝夕寒い季節であることから被災者をはじめ人々の健康を祈られているということです。

宮内庁はまた、今回の地震を受けて、両陛下が15日に予定していた静岡県訪問を取りやめたと発表した。余震が続いていることや、現場の状況が不明確なことから、少なくとも同日中はお住いの御所で状況を見守ることが必要と判断したという。
両陛下は河相侍従長を通じ、静岡県の川勝平太知事に「誠に心苦しいことであるが、今回の訪問、行事の準備に当たってきた関係者、参拝予定であった神社、演技の関係者にも知事からその旨よろしくお伝えいただきたい」などとするお気持ちを伝えたと、朝日新聞デジタルが伝えた。
