イマトラの銃乱射犯行現場
フィンランドの首都ヘルシンキから140マイル（約225キロ）東にある町イマトラで12月3日夜、男が無差別に発砲し、地元の議会議長と、2人のジャーナリストが射殺される事件があった。
被害者は全員女性で、イマトラにあるレストランの外の道路上で、3人は倒れていた。
警察は23歳の地元の男性を逮捕した。この男性は銃を乱射後、逮捕時は抵抗しなかったという。動機については明らかになっていない。

射殺された3人のうちの1人は、イマトラ町議会の議長ティーナ・ウィレン・ヤッピネン氏とみられる。
AP通信によると、殺害された市議会議長と2人のジャーナリストは30代から50代で、頭部と上半身を複数回にわたって撃たれたという。

イマトラがある南カルヤラ県の広報担当サーラ・ラウダソヤ氏は、「銃撃事件が町の繁華街にあるレストランやナイトクラブの近くで起こったことを受け、緊急対策本部を設けることにしました」と語った。
「この事件が起こった時、周囲に多くの人がいました。イマトラのような小さい街でこのような重大な事件が起き、多くの市民がショックを受けています」
人口およそ540万人のフィンランドでは、現在も狩猟の伝統が強く残っており、およそ65万人の銃の所有者が公式に登録されているが、このような銃を使った殺人事件はほとんどない。
しかしこの5年間、学校内で銃を使った殺人事件が2件あったため、フィンランドでは銃規制が強まっている。
