2014年のF1マシンが、珍獣ばかり集めた動物園状態になっているのには理由がある。安全性向上のための規約で、ノーズ先端部の高さが50cmから18.5cmへと、大きく引き下げられたからだ。規約通りに作って空力的に速いマシンを作ろうとすると、こんな変てこなノーズにならざるを得ない。
ただ、こんなマシンを作ったチーム側も「今年のマシンは美しくない」と、押しなべて不評だ。2013年に総合優勝したレッドブルチームのデザイナーを務めるエイドリアン・ニューウェイは、PlanetF1.comのインタビューに次のように答えている。
「恥ずかしいことですが、非常に奇妙な規則のせいで、今年のF1マシンは醜く粗末なノーズを持つようにデザインせざるを得ません。私にとって、F1マシンの美学は重要です。マシンはよく見えるべきです。しかし、今年のF1マシンのオーナーの多くは、自分達のマシンを愛することができないでしょう」
