アフリカ系アメリカ人男性フレディー・グレイさん(25)が警察に逮捕された際に追った傷が原因で拘留中に死亡した問題で4月27日、メリーランド州ボルティモアで抗議する住民の一部が暴徒化し、警察隊と衝突した。

グレイさんは12日、不法に刃物を所持していた容疑で逮捕された際に脊髄を損傷し、拘留中に死亡した。地元の住民は原因究明を求めて警察への抗議を続けていた。

警察は暴動鎮圧用の装備でショッピングセンターの「モンドウミン・モール」周辺で抗議する住民グループを追跡した。住民の多くは10代の若者たちとみられる。

ボルティモア警察は27日午後、少なくとも2人の警察官が負傷し病院に搬送されたと発表した。また、暴動に加担した27人を逮捕した。少なくとも1人の住民が意識不明の状態で毛布に包まれ、警察に運ばれた姿が目撃された。ハフポストUS版は警察に取材を求めたが回答は得られなかった。

メリーランド州のラリー・ホーガン知事は27日、暴力行為に加担した人々を非難する声明を発表し、非常事態を宣言して州兵を出動させた。州兵部隊のリンダ・シン少将は27日の会見で5000人の部隊を総動員してボルティモア市内の警戒にあたっていると述べた。

ボルティモア市のステファニー・ローリングス市長はボルティモア市内全域で28日から午後10時から翌午前5時までの外出を1週間禁止した。

「今夜私たちが見たことは……非常に憂慮すべき事態です」とローリング市長は述べた。「はっきりしているのは、平和的な抗議デモが行われた先週と違って、今は暴れて街を破壊しようと煽り立てる悪党たちがいる、ということです」

この日、ショッピングモールは暴動の不安から通常より早く閉店した。モンドウミン・モールのスポークスマンを務めるグレッグ・ハリス氏は、ソーシャルメディア上で午後3時から暴動が起きるという予告があったため警察と協議し、少なくとも一部店舗を閉店することに決めたと語った。

その時刻が近づくにつれ、ヘリコプターが上空を旋回する中、大勢の警官隊若者たちがショッピングモールの外に集まった。警察官が暴動用ヘルメットをしっかりと装着する中、若者たちは物を投げ始めた。

ボルティモアの犯罪と政治問題を取り上げる「ボルティモア・スペクテイター」のジェームズ・マッカーサー氏は、午後3時を過ぎたころの現場から動画をツイートした。

地元紙「ボルティモア・サン」のエリカ・グリーン記者は、「重傷」とみられる警察官の写真をツイートした。

「ロサンゼルス・タイムズ」によると、警察は群集に対してトウガラシスプレーと催涙ガスを使用した。

ボルティモア警察は27日に声明を発表し、「ブラック・ゲリラ・ファミリー」や「ブラッド・アンド・クリップス」といったギャングたちが法の執行を“無効”にするため結託していると述べた。

グレイさんの死亡に関係した警察官6人は現在休職している。
