世界的ベストセラー『百年の孤独』の作者で、1982年にノーベル文学賞を受賞したガブリエル・ガルシア・マルケス氏が4月17日、メキシコ市の自宅で死去した。87歳だった。朝日新聞デジタルなどが伝えた。

コトバンクによると、ガブリエル・ガルシア・マルケス氏は1928年、コロンビアのサンタ・マルタに近い小さな町アラカタカで生まれ、ボゴタ大学で法律を学んだ後、ジャーナリズムの道に入ってローマ、パリに在勤。

1955年に中編『落葉』を発表してから、同じく中編『大佐に手紙は来ない』(1961)、短編集『ママ・グランデの葬儀』(1962)、中編『悪い時』(1964)などを経て、20世紀小説の最大の収穫の一つと言われる『百年の孤独』(1967)を世に送った。33ヵ国語に翻訳され,600万部を売ったというこの物語は、カリブ海沿岸の村マコンドを建設したブエンディア一族の100年にわたる年代記。現実と幻想の混交する壮大な神話的世界が描かれる。

ニューヨーク・タイムズによると、1999年にリンパ腺がんを発症し、2012年には認知症が進行していた。
