アメリカの第3政党「リバタリアン党」から大統領選に立候補するゲイリー・ジョンソン氏は9月8日、MSNBCの報道番組『モーニング・ジョー』に出演し、内戦が続くシリア北部の都市アレッポについて「アレッポとは何ですか?」と発言した。

出演したとき、元ニューメキシコ州知事のジョンソン氏は、もし大統領になったら激戦が続くシリア北部の都市アレッポについてどうするかと聞かれた。

「アレッポって何ですか?」と、彼は答えた。

司会者からアレッポでの戦闘がシリア難民問題の原因のひとつだと説明を受けると、ジョンソン氏は中東でアメリカが果たす役割について意見を語り始めた。しかし『モーニング・ジョー』の司会者ジョー・スカボローが見過ごすことはなかった。

「冗談ですよね?」とジョンソン氏に尋ねると、「いいや」と、本当にわかっていないようだった。

「アレッポは最悪の人道危機を抱えた、地球上で最も人々の関心を集めている場所です。あなたは『アレッポとは何ですか?』と尋ねました。アメリカ大統領に立候補する人がアレッポが何か、アレッポがどこにあるのか、なぜアレッポがそんなに重要なのかを知らなくていいほど外交政策は些細なものとお考えですか?」

ジョンソン氏はその後の声明で、「シリアの紛争ではなく、アクロニム(頭字語)だと思っていた」と釈明した。

この数年間、アレッポはシリア政府と反体制派の衝突に苦しんでいる。戦闘によって数千人もの人々が住む場所を追われ、難民危機の拡大に繋がっている。紛争が続いているため人道支援を行うのが難しく、多くの人が取り残され、薬や水など生活必需品が不足している。

ジョンソン氏は声明の中で、アレッポの重要性をよく理解したと強調した。「シリアにあるすべての町の名前を言うことができるか?言えません」。さらに「アレッポがどんな場所か知っておくべきだったか?その通りです」と語った。

ジョンソン氏は声明の前にブルームバーグにこう語った。「私ほどこの問題を深刻に受け止めている人はいません」「最悪な気分です」「私はもっと学ばなければなりません。それこそがプロセスの一部なのです」

リバタリアン党は自由主義を標榜し、安全保障でも紛争に介入しない姿勢をとる小政党で、ジョンソン氏が当選する確率は限りなく低いが、共和党候補のドナルド・トランプ氏、民主党候補のヒラリー・クリントン氏のどちらにも投票したくないという有権者層から一定の支持を得ている。
