Google Mapsストリートビューの楽屋裏を見せるためのサイトができた…とにかくきれい
GoogleはそのTrekker（トレッカー）事業に相当な人と時間を投じて、地球上のはるか遠方の地域を地図とビューに収めてきた。そして今回は、その楽屋裏をユーザに見せ、それらの場所と制作過程の両方について、詳しく教えてくれる。そのためにGoogleが特製したサイトはBehind The Scenes site for the Treks Street View projectと名づけられ、そこにはビデオや素晴らしい画像、地図、オーディオヴィジュアルなツアーなどがある。
この楽屋裏サイトは暇つぶしに絶好だが、Googleはここで複数のプロダクトをユーザに一望させる。それらは、YouTube、Google Maps、Mapsのツアー、HTML5によるWeb技術、スライドショウ、などだ。またここは、ある意味ではChromeブラウザの潜在的な能力を見せるデモでもある。
現在、このミニサイトで見られるのは、Burj Khalifa（ブルジュハリファ, 上図）、Iqaluit（イカルイト）、Mt. Everest（エヴェレスト山）、Grand Canyon（グランドキャニオン）、Great Barrier Reef（グレートバリアリーフ）、Amazon Basin（アマゾン盆地）、Kennedy Space Center（ケネディ宇宙センター）である。Galapagos Islands（ガラパゴス島）やVenice（ヴェニス）のツアーも、もうすぐ加わるそうだ。
GoogleはTrekker事業に企業や団体の協力を求めているから、あなたが作ったビューが、このミニサイトの呼び物になる可能性もある。Googleの独創的というか独走的なプロジェクトにはときどき、何の役に立つの？と冷やかしたくなることもあるが、このミニサイトはなにしろ、ヴィジュアルがきれいである。
