キャンプはぬかるんでいて、しばしば浸水する。冬は寒く、雨が降ると湿度が高くなる。国際支援団体「国境なき医師団」によると、キャンプ全体でトイレは32、シャワーは48しかない。

密輸組織や暴力が横行していると、警察関係者はAP通信に語る。密輸に関わる人々は、国境を越えて移民や難民を取引に使っており、キャンプにも頻繁に出入りする。2週間前、キャンプ内の密輸組織間の争いで4人が負傷したと、ル・モンドは伝えた。2人が銃で撃たれ、1人はナイフで切られ、1人は警棒で殴られたと、検事は語った。このキャンプは2006年から存在しているが、2015年に収容者が急増した。2015年7月の収容者はわずか60人だったと、グランド・サントの市長は国境なき医師団に語っている。

キャンプで最も多いのは、過激派組織「イスラム国」から逃れてきたイラクのクルド人と、イスラム教シーア派が多数を握ったイラクから、差別的な扱いに耐えかねたスンニ派の人々だ。シリア在住のクルド人、クウェート人、そしてベトナム人もいる。

多くは「ジャングル」と呼ばれる、ここから25マイル(約40キロ)離れたカレーの臨時難民キャンプからやってきた。イギリスは16フィート(4.9メートル)のフェンスや監視カメラを設置し、上陸を厳しく制限している。「ジャングル」は半分の規模に縮小されることになった。ル・モンドによれば、800~1000人の難民を追い出すことになる。

1月、グランドサントの行政当局は国境なき医師団と連携し、街の別区画に難民向けの生活設備の増設に乗り出した。温水シャワーやトイレ、500の防寒テントが、国境なき医師団の全面的な資金協力で整備される。
