厳しい緊縮財政策を受け入れる「Yes」か、それともユーロ圏の離脱も辞さずの覚悟で緊縮策に反対する「No」か。金融危機で揺れるギリシャの国民投票が7月5日行われる。事前の世論調査では賛成と反対が拮抗しており、結果は予断を許さない。

「私は"No"に投票する」と言っている人には一理ある。その人は何も理解せず、自己中心的な怒りからそう言っているわけではない。その人はただ愚かなだけだ。しかし、「Yes」と言いたくないのは、過去5年間に緊縮策を進めたことで起きた混乱から解放されたい、あるいは修正なしでチプラス政権が掲げる反緊縮政策を継続させることに前向きに賛成したいと考えているからだ。また、Noと言っている人は、もし賛成票が上回ったら、まだ6カ月しか経っていないチプラス政権が崩壊するのではないか、あるいは、金融危機をもたらした古い政治家たちが政権に復帰して事態がさらに悪化するのではないかと考えている。

「私は"Yes"に投票する」と言っている人にも一理ある。しかしその人はユーロから離脱する恐怖心からそう言っているわけではない。というのも、内的減価(国内の賃金や物価の大幅な下落)によって、我が国の国民所得の25%が失われた今となっては、さらに究極の悲劇を経験するリスクは負いたくないし、ユーロが「悪貨」に等しい状態になり、その後、国内通貨のドラクマに入れ替わった時に外的減価(通貨の切り下げ)が起きるのは避けたいからだ。欧州の中核にいる我が国の立場を失いたくないし、連立政権を組んでいる保守政党「独立ギリシャ人」のパノス・カメノス国防相が軍で民族主義を煽り、学校で彼の国粋主義的な倫理が教えられることは望んでいない。これまで好き勝手に進めてきた交渉が失敗したことを認めた政府に白紙委任状を渡したくもない。私たちが国民投票に行き着いたのは、これまでの緊縮案は議会で可決できないし、議会の過半数を得られなかったからだ。緊縮案に反対している人が国民投票という核爆弾を抱えたのだから、他の緊縮策が議会で通過することなど信じられようか?

今回の議論では双方に一理あるから、私たちは分断されてしまった。だから、世界のメディアがよく使う「ギリシャ悲劇」というお決まりのフレーズが、今回はぴったり合っているのかもしれない。というのも、このギリシャ悲劇と他の芸術作品との違いは、舞台上で闘う英雄たちが善玉でも悪玉でもなく、彼らは正しくもないし間違ってもいないからだ。正しい人間もいるし、同時に間違った人間もいる。だから彼らの運命は悲劇なのだ。

これが、7月5日の投票を前に私たちが経験していることのようだ。ある意味、私たちすべての良心、私たちの家族、友人、そして国全体に善悪が共存している。まさに悲劇だ。こうした矛盾があるから、ヒュブリス(ギリシャ語で「傲慢」)が悪事をはたらく。アイスキュロスやソフォクレスが描いたギリシャ悲劇のように、私たちはギリシャの神々に逆らっているのではないが、民主主義には反している。なぜなら、これは私見だが、5日に行われる国民投票は民主主義への侮辱だからだ。国民は何が問題なのかを知らされないまま賛否を問われている。まるでお見合いデートのようだ。誰もが、それぞれ問題だと思うことを頼みにして答えを出すだろうし、6日の月曜日には、自分たちの考えとは違った答えが出たことに疑問を投げかける人も出てくるだろうし、自分たちの出した答えを変えることはできなくなる。彼らが誤解されない形で答えを出す場合はその限りではないが。

最悪の事態を回避するために、どんな答えが出たとしても、私たちは決断しよう。私たちの運命は、EUのパートナーであるドイツがどのようにとらえるかで決まる。交渉の打ち切り、銀行の閉鎖、経済の急落など過去数日の間に起きたこと(おそらく良識、自決という名のもとに)がどんなものであれ、私たちは債権者たちのまな板の上の鯉になろう。古代のギリシャ悲劇の英雄たちがたどった運命のごとく、神が裁きを下す。
