【HAKUTO】月面探査チームを支える滋賀の工場 「レーシングカーと同じ。プレッシャーない」

そう言って、製造部の片山伸吾さんは見学者の前で笑った。ここは、滋賀県米原市の東レ・カーボンマジック社(以下、カーボンマジック社)。企業や大学など民間の力でつくる月面探査チーム「HAKUTO」が使う探査ロボットを組み立て中だ。片山さんは、同社で焼き上げられたカーボン素材を特殊な接着剤で固定する部門を担当している。

カーボンマジック社は、もともとレーシングカーを製作する「童夢(どうむ)」の子会社だった。2006年からは親会社が東レに代わったが、レーシングカーの車体生産で培われたカーボン素材の開発・生産で知られている。HAKUTOの月面探査用の探査ロボット「SORATO」の重さはわずか4キロ。カーボンマジック社が特別に開発したカーボン素材を多用することで大幅な軽量化に成功した。車づくりのノウハウを生かして、宇宙へ。片山さんは「普段組み立てているレーシングカーの部品も、月面探査機も間違いが許されないという意味では一緒。プレッシャーはない」と涼しい顔で言った。

■月のウサギから名付けられた「HAKUTO」

宇宙開発といえば、莫大な資金が必要で、国家事業で行うケースがほとんどだった。冷戦が終わる前は、アメリカと当時のソ連が国家の威信をかけて激しく争った「官のプロジェクト」だった。

しかし、HAKUTOは、企業・大学・ボランティアの民間の力だけで、地球から38万km離れた月をめざすのが特徴だ。チーム名は、昔話で月面にいると伝えられる白いウサギ「白兎」から名付けられた。アメリカでも、IT起業家のイーロン・マスク氏が有人宇宙船を火星に向けて打ち上げる構想を明かすなど、民間主導の宇宙開発が活発化している。

HAKUTOは、「Google Lunar XPRIZE」という民間による最初の月面無人探査を競う国際コンテストでの優勝を狙っている。①2017年内のロケット打ち上げ ②着陸地点から500メートル以上移動すること ③高解像度の静止画データを地球に送信すること、などの条件を満して優勝した場合、賞金2000万ドル(約22億円)が提供される。4月現在、世界の5チームが月着陸を目指して競い合っている。HAKUTOはインドの「チームインダス」と相乗りして、同国のロケットで12月に打ち上げられる予定だ

HAKUTOのプロジェクトを取りまとめるベンチャー企業「ispace」の秋元衆平さんは「HAKUTOを通じて、少しでも人の心を動かすきっかけを作りたいと思って参加しました。最初はめちゃくちゃ不安でしたが、プロジェクトに関わる人で『絶対ダメ』とか『無理』と言う人はいなかった。時間はかかるかもしれないけど『絶対できる』と思っています」と胸を張った。

■「手作業が多かった」驚く女子高生

4月7日の見学会には、朝日小学生新聞や朝日中高生新聞で「特派員」を務める少年少女ら3人も参加した。記者として工場見学をしながら、真剣な表情でメモを取っていた。そのうちの一人、高校3年生の安田朱里(やすだ・あかり)さんは「工場内では、意外と手作業が占める部分が多いことに驚きました。HAKUTOのプロジェクトに関わる人が、みんな楽しそうにやっているのが印象的でした」と話していた。
