羽生は30日のSPで違反が重なり、2つのジャンプが0点。基礎点だけで合わせて約20点が見込めていたただけに、悔しい結果となっていた。
31日のフリーでは、冒頭の4回転ジャンプ2つを立て続けに成功。後半のジャンプでは手をつく場面も見られたが、完成度の高い演技を見せた。
演技の後、羽生は記者会見で「ショートプログラムでは点が稼げなかった。それがルールだったし」と英語でコメント。しかし羽生は「フリーでは全てうまくやれると思った。6分練習ではよくなかったけど、私は私自身を、自分の体を信じていた」などと話した。
そして、途中で日本語に切り替え、「ショートのときは、とにかくできるんだ、大丈夫だと思っていた。今日の自分の感覚とはちょっと違って、すごく落ち着いていた。だけどすごく興奮していた。ちょっと矛盾しているかもしれないけれども。今回の演技こそノーミスでできると思っていた。だけど今日はちょっと違って、大げさなことを言うと、失敗してもいいし、練習通りに一生懸命やろうと思っていました」などと述べた。
