アラワイ運河沿いには歩行者専用の歩道がずっと続いており、散歩にはうってつけの場所。のんびり散歩する人やランニングする人も多く見られます。美容家のIKKOさんもここでのウォーキングがお気に入りとか。

ダイヤモンドヘッド側の運河のちょうど向こう岸には、ゴルフコースがあります。ダイヤモンドヘッドのきれいな山肌もここから眺めることができます。

アラワイ運河をまたぐ橋は数えるほどしかありませんが、そのひとつからダイヤモンドヘッド側を見た写真がこちら。にぎやかで華やかなワイキキビーチやカラカウア通りとは違った魅力が見つけられるはずです。

アラワイ運河は最後にハワイプリンスホテルワイキキのすぐ横にあるハーバーに流れつきます。こちらの写真のまっすぐ先がハーバーで、そこに現在ショッピングストアなどの複合施設が建設中です。写真右手に見えるのがさまざまなイベントが行われるハワイ・コンベンション・センター。

夕方になると、アラワイ運河では地元のカヌーのチームが練習をよく行っています。またゴム製のあひるのおもちゃをこの運河に大量に流してレースを行う、「グレート・ハワイアン・ラバー・ダッキー・レース」というチャリティイベントも毎年行われています。

日が落ちる時間が近づけば、朝とは違う美しい景色が待っています。ちょうど太陽が沈む方角が、運河が海に流れつく先にあるため、息が止まるようなこんな光景に出会えるでしょう。街の明かりが水面に映り、幻想的な雰囲気に包まれた時間が訪れます。

最後に注意事項を何点かご紹介します。ワイキキ内では自転車やローラーブレードは車道を走らなければならず、歩道を走ることは禁じられています。アラワイ運河のこの散歩道も同じで、違反者は警察に捕まえられます。また日が完全に落ちた後はアラワイ運河を歩く人はほとんどいなくなります。危険から守るため、夜にここを歩くことは避けましょう。
