2月11日（現地時間）、ソチオリンピック・男子スノーボードハーフパイプ決勝が行われ、平野歩夢が2位、平岡卓が3位に入り、今大会、初の日本勢のメダル獲得となった。
2回の演技で良かった方の点で競う競技で、金メダルを取ったスイスのユーリ・ポードラチコフは94.75、平野は93.5、平岡は92.25だった。
なお、トリノ、バンクーバーと過去2大会で金メダルを取った「絶対王者」ショーン・ホワイトは、一回目の演技を失敗して35点、二回目も90.25と振るわず、4位だった。
銀メダルを取った平野は15歳。2013年8月にはスノーボードのワールドカップに初出場で初優勝するなど、メダル獲得が期待されていた。
