先日より米国南西部では記録的な猛暑が続いている。そこで一体どれほど暑いのかを実証するため、地元紙『Las Vegas Review-Journal』の２人の女性記者が実験を試みた。最高気温が約43度に達したネバダ州ラスベガス・バレーで、太陽光の熱だけを使ってクッキーを焼いたり朝食を作ったりできるか試したのだ。

まずは、マツダのダッシュボードでクッキーが焼けるかどうかを実験。２人は午後１時頃、アルミホイルを敷いたトレーにクッキー生地を並べ、着色ガラスではないフロントガラスの下に設置した。５時にトレーを確認すると、クッキーはちゃんと焼き上がっていたという。このクッキーを試食したスタッフたちは、さくっとして美味しいと口々にコメントしている。

マツダの車内でクッキーが焼けている間、２人はさらにその暑さを立証すべく、今度はもう少し本格的な料理に挑戦。駐車場の一角にあるアスファルトの上で、卵、ベーコン、エビが焼けるか試してみた。エビは火が通りやすいので問題がなかったが、ベーコンは20分経っても端が茶色になっただけで中心部分は生のまま。卵も残念ながら調理には至らなかった。とことん熱せられたアスファルトも、卵の白身が固まるには充分ではないことが分かった。

記録的な暑さに見舞われている米国南西部やカリフォルニア州南部の一帯には、"ヒートドーム"と呼ばれる気象現象が起きている。カリフォルニア州南部やアリゾナ州、ネバダ州一帯では、6月中旬としては記録的となる約37度を超える気温を観測。既に山火事の被害が広がっており、人々は猛暑による健康被害にも悩まされている。
