ヒュンダイに過去最高400億円の制裁　燃費性能の過大表示で

燃費性能を過大表示した韓国の現代自動車（ヒュンダイ）と傘下の起亜自動車（キア）に、過去最高となる制裁が課される。

韓国の現代自動車（ヒュンダイ）と傘下の起亜自動車（キア）は11月3日、自動車の燃費性能を過大表示して販売したことに対し、3億5000万ドル（約400億円）相当を支払うことでアメリカ当局と同意した。1億ドル（約113億円）の制裁金を支払うほか、温室効果ガス排出権2億ドル相当を放棄する。この問題の和解金額としては過去最大となる。

この問題は、ヒュンダイとキアが2012年と2013年モデルの車をアメリカで販売する際に、高速燃費が40マイル/ガロン（約17km/リットル）として大々的に宣伝し、日本車などの競合会社に対する燃費の良さをアピールしていたもの。両メーカー合わせて120万台を販売したとされる。

アメリカ環境保護局（EPA）によると、対象の自動車を調査したところ、会社が宣伝していた燃費推定値より、1ガロンあたり1〜6マイル、性能が低かったという。EPAはさらに燃費性能テストで「燃費テストの結果の平均値ではなく、都合の良い有利な結果を表示に用いた疑いがある」と指摘した。

EPAはアメリカで生産する自動車メーカーに燃費テストの結果を提出することを求めている。2014年モデルの車のなかでは、トヨタの「プリウス」や日産の「リーフ」、ホンダの「フィット」などが、それぞれのクラスのなかで最も性能が良い車としてランキングされている。
