イチローは、４番手として１回１８球を投げ、２安打１失点だった。この日はレギュラーシーズンの最終戦。マーリンズは２－７で敗れ、同選手はチームの今季を締めくくる投手となった。
イチローは愛知・愛工大名電高で、投手として甲子園大会に出場。プロ野球のオリックス時代には、１９９６年のオールスター戦でパ・リーグの投手を務めたことがある。

カーブやチェンジアップなどの変化球を交えた投球で、最速は89マイル（143キロ）だった。「ショックでしたね、最低90（マイル）とは思ってましたからね」と語った。
スポニチによると、イチローにとってメジャーでの登板はかねてからの念願でもあったといい、「通常あり得ない。その事実に対しては思い出として残しますが、2回目は要らないです」と話した。
イチローは今シーズン、打率.229、ホームラン1本、21打点で、いずれもメジャーに移籍してから自己最低の成績に終わった。
