インド南部ケララ州のヒンズー教寺院で現地時間の4月10日未明、祭りで打ち上げられていた花火が引火して次々と爆発、炎上した。ロイターによると100人以上が死亡し、負傷者は400人近くになるという。
モディ首相は現地の病院で負傷者を慰問し、「胸が張り裂けそうなほどショッキングな出来事で言葉も出ない」と語ったという。
現地紙のヒンドゥスタン・タイムズによると、今回のプッティンガル・デビ寺院では例年、花火を使ったお祭りをしていた。今年は1万人以上が参加していたという。寺院側からの花火打ち上げ許可申請を、安全上の懸念などから地元当局が却下しており、警察が捜査を開始した。
