1976年6月26日、東京・日本武道館。プロレスラーのアントニオ猪木と、プロボクサーで当時世界ヘビー級チャンピオンだったモハメド・アリが「格闘技世界一決定戦」で対戦した。

伝説の異種格闘技の対戦から40年になるのを機に、日本記念日協会は、6月26日を「世界格闘技の日」に制定した。5月16日、朝日新聞デジタルが伝えた。

この対戦は、ファイトマネーがアリ18億円、猪木6億円の「30億円興行」とも呼ばれた。組み合わせの異色さから「真剣勝負か、それとも単なるショーか」と大きな話題を呼んだこの「世紀の大戦」を、当時の写真と朝日新聞の記事で振り返ってみた。

来日したアリは、記者会見でさっそく猪木を挑発した。

「イノーキがオレを尊敬しないのが気にくわん。今回はオヤジがこどもをしかりつけるようにしてこらしめてやる。オレは、試合前に必ず相手にあだ名をつけるが、イノーキはペリカンだ。あのアゴを狙えば間違いない」といった調子で、売り物のKO予告は「八回」だという。(朝日新聞1976年6月17日付朝刊)

18日、東京の日本外国特派員協会で記者会見した2人。「オレは世界一なんだ。イノーキ(猪木)なんて日本やアメリカの一部で少しは名前を知られていても、大したほどじゃない。しかし、今回、オレとやることで、世界中に名前が売れる」と息巻くアリ。

「アリ、という名前が日本語じゃどんな意味か知ってるか。ちっちゃなアント(蟻)だぞ。踏みつぶしてやる」と応酬した猪木は、アリに松葉杖をプレゼントした。(同、6月19日付朝刊)

試合は「30万円の席に空席がないほど上々の入り」だったが、「大きな見せ場もなく、引き分けた」。

猪木はパンチを避け、リング中央に寝転がって、かにばさみに出ると、いつもの半分という4オンスの軽いグローブをつけたアリは、左右のパンチならぬ〝足げり〟で応戦した。そして例によって口からアワをとばしてのヤジ攻撃。

13回、猪木のタックルが決まって組み付いたが、アリはロープに逃れた。14回、アリの左ストレートが初めてきれいに猪木の顔面をとらえたが、KOするまでにはいたらずじまい。見せ場といえばこの2回だけで、しょせんボクシングとレスリングは水と油。あっけにとられたファンを置き去りにして、2人は仲良く抱き合ってロッカールームへと消えた。(朝日新聞1976年6月26日付夕刊)
