iPad mini 3が発表 2、そして初代との違いは?

iPad miniシリーズの最新モデル、iPad mini 3が発表された。iPad mini 2など旧機種との違いは何か。

アップルが開催したスペシャルイベントにおいて駆け足気味で発表されたのが、iPad miniシリーズの最新モデル、iPad mini 3です。

ここでは、iPad mini Retinaディスプレイモデルから(しれっと)改名されたiPad mini 2、そして初代iPad miniとの比較表を含めた、改良点まとめをお届けします。なお、iPad miniシリーズは初代と2が値下げの上継続販売されるため、3モデルはすべて現役です。

さて、ある意味で驚くのが、iPad mini 3とmini 2間での変更点です。というのも少なくとも公式スペックの上では、

  • Touch IDを搭載
  • 本体カラーにゴールドを追加

という2点のみだからです。

CPU(SoC)も両者で同じApple A7+M7ですし、薄さをはじめとして本体サイズや重量も同じ。他社のマイナーチェンジモデルでアップデートされることの多い、Cellularモデルでの対応LTEバンドやWi-Fiの仕様といった点に関しても、仕様を見る限りは同じです。

そのためか、公式ページに掲載された製品のキャッチフレーズ、いわゆるタグラインも「Touch ID搭載。」のみで、悪い意味でいつものAppleらしくない印象の薄さです。

同時に発表されたiPad Air 2がAirと比べても大幅な強化となり、また昨今のApple製品では珍しい、1世代の違いなのに本体の寸法が変わるほどのモデルチェンジとなった点に比べると、淋しい感は否めないのが正直なところ。

ただ好意的な評価をするならば、現状でminiにおいては、2の仕様がCPUの処理能力や本体サイズ、バッテリー駆動時間といった相反する要素のバランスを保つのに(1年経ってもまだ)好適である......と捉えることもできるかもしれません。

ともあれ、こうした変更点の少なさもあってか、冒頭で紹介したように、iPad miniシリーズは3モデルが併売されます。ここで注目したいのが、仕様がほぼ同じで、なおかつ価格が下がったmini 2のお買い得感の高さでしょう。

Touch IDは便利な機能ではありますが、とくに16GB版などでは「この価格差であれば2を購入する」という選択肢は大いにアリではないでしょうか。
