iPhone 7にはイヤホンジャックがなくなる？その噂の根拠とは

次期 iPhone から3.5mmヘッドホン出力がなくなるという話。日本の Apple 系情報サイト Macお宝探偵団が信頼筋からの情報として、iPhone 7 では3.5mmヘッドホン端子が廃止されるという話を伝えています。もしそれが現実となれば画面サイズなどはそのままに現行のiPhone 6s に比べ1mm以上の薄型化が実現するかもしれません。

2007年、スティーブ・ジョブズは Macworld カンファレンスの場で電話を再発明したとして iPod + 携帯電話 + インターネット の3大機能を搭載する初代 iPhone を世に紹介しました。3.5mm ヘッドホン出力端子は iPhone の音楽再生機能のため、初代 iPhone から搭載されていました。

3.5mm ヘッドホン出力端子を備える利点のひとつは、ユーザーが自由に好みのヘッドホンを利用できるところです。逆に不利な点は、近年顕著になりつつある iPhone の薄型化の邪魔になること。3.5mmヘッドホン端子は断面が円形なため、どうしても端子部分に3.5mmプラスアルファの厚みが必要となります。

アップルは今年9月、3.5mmミニジャックの一部をバッサリと切り落としたような特殊なコネクターの特許を取得したことが伝えられていました。ただ、このコネクターだと挿しこむときの表裏が発生するわりに、厚みは1mm削れるかどうかといったところ。これでは採用してもあまり薄型化には貢献できそうにありません。

とすると、筐体を薄くするためにはやはり Lightning 端子をヘッドホン用としても使うことが最善の策のように思えます。フィリップスの Fidelio M2L など、すでに Lightning 接続の DAC 内蔵ヘッドホンはいくつか発売されているほか Lightning 端子から3.5mmヘッドホン端子へと変換する電源不要の DAC 製品もすでに発売されています。

一方、有線よりも音質は低下するものの Bluetooth ヘッドホンへ移行するというシナリオも考えられます。標準で付属する EarPods に Bluetooth 機能をもたせるほうが、DAC 搭載の Lightning-3.5mm 変換ケーブルを用意するよりもコストは低く押さえられるかもしれません。また音質にこだわるならばソニーが開発したコーデック LDAC のように Bluetooth でもハイレゾ級の音質を実現する技術もあります。

アップルは今年 Apple Music を開始したばかりであり、iPhone の音楽再生機能はいまも重要な要素のひとつ。たとえ3.5mmヘッドホン端子をなくすことになったとしても、かならず音楽を楽しめるようにはするはずです。

海外の Android スマートフォンのなかには、すでに薄型化のためにヘッドホン端子を切り捨てた製品も存在します。ただ本体の薄さをアピールするのも結構ではあるものの、薄くしすぎると強度不足を招きます。ケツ圧で筐体が曲がってしまったベンドゲート問題の再発だけはかんべんしてほしいものです。
