［ワシントン／バグダッド １０日 ロイター］ - 米国務省は１０日、イラクのマスーム大統領を憲法の保証人として「全面的に支持」すると表明した。イラクのマリキ首相は、マスーム大統領が憲法に違反していると批判していた。
国務省のハーフ副報道官は声明で、「憲法や法的な手続きをねじ曲げることで結果を得るような試みを認めない」と指摘。米国がイラク情勢を注視しており、イラクの指導者らと連絡を取っているとも述べた。
イラクでは４月の連邦議会選挙で、マリキ首相率いる党派が最多議席を獲得したが、いまだに次期首相選出をめぐる行き詰まりを打開できていない。
テレビ演説でマリキ首相は、首相指名と政権樹立を最大の政治勢力に要請する期限を守らず、憲法に違反したとして、マスーム大統領を批判。
マリキ首相は「マスーム大統領が政治的な打算に基づいて、憲法に違反したことを、きょう連邦裁判所に正式に申し立てる」と述べた。
スンニ派、クルド人勢力、シーア派の一部、イランなどは、マリキ首相が退き、民族・宗派間の対立を解消できるような人物が首相に就任することを求めているが、マリキ首相はそうした要求を一蹴した。
マリキ政権に対するスンニ派の不満が、過激組織「イスラム国」への支持につながったとの批判もあり、米国側はマリキ首相の対応にしびれを切らしている。
米国務省のマクガーク副次官補は、イラクのマスーム大統領に対する全面的な支持を表明。
イラク・イラン担当のマクガーク副次官補はツイッターで「憲法の保証人として、国民のコンセンサスを構築できる（首相）候補としてマスーム大統領を全面的に支持する」と述べた。
イラクの首都バグダッドでは、首相のテレビ演説後、中枢部にマリキ首相支持派の特殊部隊が配備され、警備が強化された。
一方、米中央軍は、クルド人自治区の中心都市アルビル近郊で、イスラム国の装甲車など狙った空爆を実施したことを明らかにした。空爆の実施はこれで３日連続。
また米国務省は１０日、アルビルの米総領事館から職員の一部を退避させたと発表した。
