アイルランドのエンダ・ケニー首相は3月16日、アイルランドの守護聖人、聖パトリックの命日(17日)にあたる祝日祝日「セント・パトリック・デー」を前にアメリカへ公式訪問した。ケニー首相は会見で、ドナルド・トランプ大統領の過酷な移民政策を遠回しに非難した。

忘れてはならないのは、聖パトリック自身が移民だったという点だ。そしてアイルランド系移民は、アメリカ社会の土台作りに積極的に貢献している。

ケニー首相はトランプ大統領との共同会見で「聖パトリックは、言うまでもなくアイルランドの守護聖人ですが、地球上の多くの人にとって、彼は移民の象徴でもあり、守護者でもあるのです」とコメントした。「私たちは、アメリカの保護、アメリカの思いやり、アメリカの機会を信じました。私たちはここにやって来て、そして、アメリカ人になったのです」

また、ケニー首相は、アメリカにいる5万人のアイルランド人不法移民に言及しつつ、この人たちに市民権を付与する道筋をつけたいとも話した。

「この問題を解決したいと思います。そうすれば、今は日の当たるところで我慢している多くの人の負担をなくすことができるでしょう。すると彼らは、『やっと自由になった。これで思い通りにアメリカに貢献できる』と言えるようになります。これこそ、誰もが望んでいることです」

アイルランド、アメリカの活動家たちは、ニューヨーク市で移民歓迎のイベントを3月17日に開催する予定だ。

トランプ氏はスピーチの中で、表面上はアイルランド人に自国への貢献を感謝した。しかしトランプ氏は、この数週間、移民受け入れを厳格化する数々の政策を打ち出している。それは、見知らぬ人でも歓迎し、立場の弱い人に安全な場所を提供するという、アメリカが長い歴史の中でこだわってきた価値観をひっくり返す可能性があるものだ。

トランプ氏は一度ならず二度までも、イスラム圏の国からの入国を一時禁止し、難民定住プログラムを中止する大統領令に署名した。いずれの決定も、連邦地裁が一時的に差し止めている

トランプ氏は16日、国防費を540億ドル(約6兆1020億円)増額し、メキシコ国境沿いの壁建設など移民流入を阻止する国境警備費を含む予算案を発表した。
