イタリア海軍は7月7日、2015年4月に地中海で転覆沈没した船の残骸から217人の遺体を発見したと発表した。ロイターなどが報じた。
ABCニュースによると、イタリア当局はシチリア島の南西にある沈没現場の海底から船の引き上げ作業を行い、発見された217人の遺体のうち52体を解剖に回した。
4月に起きた船の転覆事故で救出された28人の証言によると、船にはおよそ700〜800人が乗船していたとみられ、イタリア当局は死者数は500人近くになり、地中海の難民船転覆事故としては最悪レベルだと述べている。
ロイターによると、船の引き上げ作業にはイタリア海軍や消防署、イタリア赤十字、ミラノ大学の法医学教授チームなど150人の専門家とボランティアが参加し、遺体の収容と検視を行った。
2015年に地中海で亡くなった難民は少なくとも3770人とみられ、その大半が船の転覆による溺死だった。
