ラグビーのワールドカップ（W杯）イングランド大会で、すでに1次リーグ敗退が決まっている日本は10月11日、アメリカ戦に28対18で勝って通算成績を3勝1敗とし、歴史的快進撃を見せた今大会を終えた。日刊スポーツなどが報じた。
３勝して１次リーグで敗退するチームはＷ杯史上初めて。
日本は前半にＷＴＢ藤田慶和（早大）のトライなどで１７－８で折り返し、後半はＦＢ五郎丸歩（ヤマハ発動機）の２ＰＧなどで得点を重ねた。

日本代表のエディ・ジョーンズHC（ヘッドコーチ）は試合後、「とてもハッピーでいい勝利でした」と話し、さらに「このチームはさらに伸びる。次のW杯でも、またいいチームができると思う」と期待を込めた。
日本は通算成績3勝1敗で勝ち点「12」となり、グループB組3位で大会を終えた。同組は南アフリカとスコットランドが準々決勝に進出し、日本は目標の8強入りには届かなかった。
次回の2019年大会は日本で開催され、日本は予選を免除されることが決まっている。
